A COMPLETE UNKNOWN follows nineteen-year-old Bob Dylan's arrival in New York in 1961, searching for his hero, an ailing Woody Guthrie. He was welcomed by the New York folk scene (Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and others) who recognized his talent. He finds work in downtown clubs and soon becomes a phenomenon, signed to Columbia Records. The film follows Dylan's rise to cultural phenomenon, his strong relationships in the world of folk music, and his eventual transition away from folk music, forming a band, confusing his fans, and disappointing the musical community that initially embraced him.
